T ime seemed to crawl by at an impossibly slow pace for the next two weeks, but February 9th finally arrived. The three KGB men arrived early that morning at Artyom's apartment.

The first order of business was for them to search through his luggage. Artyom was only carrying one suitcase and a small briefcase with him for the trip. Yet, the KGB men went through both pieces of luggage with extreme care. Artyom had no idea what they were expecting to find, but after going through every item in both and then carefully inspecting the bags themselves, they seemed finally satisfied Artyom wasn't trying to smuggle any contraband out of the Soviet Union. Artyom repacked both pieces while they closely watched him, and they all filed out of his apartment and downstairs to the waiting van taking them to the airport.
